Here at Summer Chase Apartments, we are fortunate enough to live five miles from the beautiful beaches of the Mississippi Gulf Coast! Though many of us like to explore the area, how much do we really know about it? No matter where you are in the country, if you order oysters or shrimp, they probably came from the Gulf Coast! In fact, we’re the source of 69% of shrimp in the country and 70% of oysters. Yum!
The famous Biloxi Lighthouse wasn’t actually made in Biloxi. It was made all the way in Baltimore, Maryland. Once it was constructed, it was shipped to Biloxi.
Ocean Springs: It Isn’t What It Used to Be
Ocean Springs isn’t what it used to be—in name, that is! In 1699, it used to be called “Old Biloxi.”

A local Southern Live Oak is actually older than our country—and by hundreds of years. This enormous tree is estimated to be more than 500 years of age!
Stay with us—our town has had its name translated a ton. As you known, Biloxi is a mainstay of the Gulf Coast community. However, did you also know that it’s translated from the French transliteration “Bilocci?” That, in turn, was the French way to spell the name of the Native Americans who lived in the area.
Visiting the Islands
The Mississippi Gulf Coast is actually home to barrier islands too. Though they may look far off, you can visit Petit Bois and other islands by boat.
Another one of the fun facts about the Mississippi Gulf Coast involves a cool marine creature: dolphins! These mammals can be spotted along the Mississippi Sound, which actually is home to a statistically significant amount of them. That means you don’t have to go to far-away locales to see dolphins—you can just visit our coast!
