Ships have followed the bright rays from the Biloxi Lighthouse since 1848. This local landmark has remained a part of our town, watching it grow and change—and welcoming new folks into the area. Though you may not be able to visit it in-person at the moment, you can always take a little virtual tour as you learn more about the lighthouse.
The Importance of Lighthouses
Did you know that Biloxi was founded in 1699? It’s true—we’ve been around that long. Back then, ships were of extreme importance, bringing supplies and settlers to America. The waters, though, could be choppy, dark, and entirely unpredictable. Ships could even sink with the coast just slightly out-of-reach—or they could run into unseen cliffs. That meant lighthouses saved countless lives.
The History of the Biloxi Lighthouse
It took more than a hundred years after Biloxi’s founding before the Biloxi Lighthouse that we know and love was built. Completed in 1848, it’s now in its 172nd year. After a year of construction, it went into action. Famously, it even had a few women running the job. Its owners ranged from the Coast Guard to the City of Biloxi itself.
Over time, travel shifted from a primarily ship-based operation to train-based, then car-and-plane-based methods. Still, the lighthouse has always been a place of historical significance. As a result, it has remained open on and off for tours, closing after Hurricane Katrina’s destruction, and opening again after repairs. Despite all the changes brought by history and stormy seas, it remains standing tall!
