If you want to mix up your event calendar this holiday season, make plans to visit a local gem. Be inspired—not by the spirit of Christmas—but by art, land, and buildings! The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art is a unique museum dedicated to celebrating a unique individual and the Mississippi Gulf Coast’s distinct social culture.
One of a Kind Museum
The museum, located at 386 Beach Blvd., sits on a four-acre campus nestled among a grove of ancient Live Oaks. Architect Frank Gehry made sure to design structures that capture the imaginative, free-spirit of George Ohr, the Mississippi master potter. The result is a series of six structures that are as bold and intriguing as the museum’s namesake.
The Six Structures
The grounds include the buildings that Gehry designed. First is the Mississippi Sound Welcome Center, serving as the main entrance and including a café. Then, The Gallery of African-American Art, which currently features the works of Dean Mitchell, Southern painter. Another is the IP Casino Resort Spa Exhibitions Gallery. Also find the City of Biloxi Center for Ceramics, which has studio hours and fun classes and events.
Visitors to the Ohr-Okeefe Museum of Art will also find the structures known as The Pods tucked in the majestic Live Oak trees. Officially named The John S. & James L. Knight Gallery, these four gently sculpted spaces donned in stainless steel are home to more than 200 pieces of George Ohr pottery as well as pieces from a few other potters. From his original works, you get a glimpse into the creative spirit that belonged to the man known as the “Mad Potter.”
The Mad Potter
Ohr was a Biloxi native who was not only a talented potter, but actually a clever marketer ahead of his time. Photographs show examples of signs he posted at world fairs that said things like, “Get a Biloxi souvenir before the potter dies, or gets a reputation.” This sort of humor and even his distinct long mustache are all part of his carefully-crafted persona.
